Parents should play a major role too

I met a mother recently who was quite fed up with her son’s behavior at home and in the school too. Rightly so because as a parent, she was concerned about her child's slipping grades and general welfare.

She called me over to her house to have a meeting with her son, who I found to be very

intelligent and smart but upon prodding further, I found out that he was a victim of a system of education in Singapore, where technology plays a major role.

He was studying in an International School where extensive usage of electronic devices was encouraged and the teachers were using iPads to teach in the classrooms. I was also

shocked by the fact that the teachers were encouraging him not to study during his school holidays. There was no push to read books and emphasize on the very basics of education, i.e. learn from home.

I always believe in the saying that “education begins at home” and parents have to create

an atmosphere of strict discipline at home first and only then the child will be able to learn

in the school. Most of the teachers here are caught in the “money making game”, with little or no emphasis on personal grooming of the child to achieve great heights in their careers

and become better citizens of the society.

My focus has always been to teach, groom and create an awareness among parents to

guide their children to go back to the very basics of learning, which is the old fashioned way, learn at home.

Most of the Japanese mothers stay at home and I would encourage them to play a major

part in the grooming of their children because they are the future of the society and play a major part in shaping it.
