Education begins at home

When I was growing up in London, my parents were working hard to save money to send me to some of the most prestigious schools and Colleges, in those days. Yes, I learnt a lot in the education institutes and eventually got my Degrees but I have to admit that my Education would never be complete if they had not set important ground rules at home.

My father was a very strict, Army officer who set very high standards in just about anything we did. From exercising, to studying and to going sleep in time, were rules to abide by, on a daily basis.

Thankfully, those days, there were no IPads, or IPhones or colour TV's or, social media to distract us, we could focus entirely on studies. However, my parents made sure that, a“studious atmosphere" was created in the house, where we would love studying and never lose our attention.

Personally, I did not like being burdened with so much academic work just like any other kid but slowly I stared falling in love with reading and writing. My parents always made sure that we would keep practicing and working harder because I remember my father constantly reminding me, "do you know how to tough the competition is outside"? That made us study more and achieve greater heights.

Fast forward to the year, 2018 and I am deeply disappointed with the number of "distractions' that have crept in the lives of growing up children. Electronic devices have taken over the classrooms and homes and teachers have taken a back seat in educating children. Everyone has become so reliant on these devices that teachers these days do not bother going in detail to educate, young, bright minds. From the way children write to the way they speak is all in "short cuts",teachers do not encourage children to do “fact finding”, or teaching the students to open up a dictionary to cross check simple words.

My advice to anyone who is reading this is, please create a 'studious atmosphere' in the house, get rid of the electronic devices, spend more time with your precious, beautiful children, dedicate a room for them, where they will feel a sense of belonging and where they will feel encouraged to sit down on a chair and study. Support them, make them feel loved and most of all, keep reminding yourself that just the way you became good citizens of the society, you would like them to be too.
