My method of teaching.

It has been eight long years since I started teaching, both Business and Conversation English to the Japanese community in Singapore. Initially,I started advertising in the now defunct, “J-Plus” magazine and since then I have had a very large database of students from varied backgrounds.

From doctors, dentists, accountants of companies to students as young as eight years old, all have learnt the language from me. In fact, my relationship with my students has gone beyond the teacher-student equation and many of my students who had to go back to Japan after their stay in Singapore, still stay in touch with me. I have worked very hard with them to achieve their personal goals, be it just learning to speak English or to pass the tough, IELTS examination to migrate to Australia or other countries. On retrospect, I feel a sense of pride and happiness in my heart, to have formed a lifelong bond with my students and whenever they return to Singapore, they make it a point to meetup with me.

So, what makes me different from the other teachers and how are my teaching methods so effective? Well, it is a combination of both, my dedication and the student’s honesty to commit to learn. My experience of working in the Hospitality Industry for the past twenty years helped me to get a deep insight into the people management skills. I learnt the strengths and weaknesses of each student but never told them about the weak points, always encouraging them to improve on their strengths.

My classes are not the typical grammar and chapter by chapter based lessons, although they can be if a student’s demands so. To start with, I tell my student about what I expect from him or her and then support them in every possible way with teaching materials, latest technological trends in E learning, podcasts E books etc. The conversations and lessons vary from class to class depending upon an individual’s background and understanding capabilities. For example, if a student of mine is a banker, I know that he has attained a certain level of experience and achievement in his career. In this case,

my class discussion may vary from discussing about Bitcoins to recent events shaping the politics of the world. By having very wide range of discussions, in which I incorporate many idioms, phrases and difficult words, I thus encourage my student to expand their vocabulary in the process. Moreover, I also relate my personal life’s experiences and try to match them to the student’s requirements.

The key element of my teaching methodology is to always encourage my students, along his or her journey to attain fluency in the language. I always set the bar high in terms of usage of vocabulary and

encourage my students to set their standards high too, without making any compromises.

I feel that if leaning English is your mission, then please raise your standards in the way, you speak, learn, listen or write and it all begins and ends with a very experienced teacher.
